PRINCE Escalus
‘For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.’
Romeo and Juliet is
a tragic love story, after all, William Shakespeare is remembered for his great tragic
dramas and poetry. The play is set in the era of the late 1590s, however, there have
been arguments if it was written in the early 1590s, yet, Shakespeare’s writing
style counterfeits it. As the title suggests, it is indeed a story of two
individuals Romeo and Juliet who belong to families which share a history. Well,
a perfect setting for Cupid’s mischief. They weren’t spared by Cupid like their
families. Romeo and Juliet is not just a romantic tragedy but it also talks
about how time rules the proceedings of life.
Romeo is caught in the hatred when unintentionally he slays
Juliet’s cousin Tybalt, yet, she believes in her love, blindly. Father Friar
tries to protect this love but his actions pave the way for the tragedy.
JULIET
Snatching Romeo’s dagger
This is thy sheath;
Stabs herself
There rust, and let me die.
Falls on Romeo’s body and dies
Love lets you rationalize some actions which might have
amazed you before.
Like many other novels, there is a pinch of tension being
relieved i.e. happy ending, when both the families accept that their hatred was a root cause of all the mess in the state. They decide to carry forward anything but hatred.
Shakespeare's 'Out-topping knowledge’ is not easy to
comprehend, yet I feel the play is quite explainable itself.
Happy Reading!
